Built in 1898, St Mary’s Lighthouse stands upon a tiny rocky island north of Whitley Bay. There have been lights on this island since the 11th century, first at the priory that stood there, then from a previous lighthouse built in 1664.
The Grade II listed lighthouse is no longer active, and is now a visitor’s centre, museum and café.
